Jiang Tai Gong once served the king of Shang dynasty, and began to hate him for tyranny from the bottom of heart. Jiang Tai Gong was a genius in military tactics and government management. He lived near the Weihe River about 3,000 years ago. The area was the feudal estate of Count Ji Chang. Jiang Tai Gong knew Ji Chang was very ambitious, so he hoped to get Ji’s attention. He often went fishing at the Weihe River, but he would fish in an unusual way. He hung a straight fishhook, without bait, three feet above the water. Lookers-on were curious about it, and Jiang Tai Gong explained, “I would like to take honestly rather than to ask for with the knees down. I fish not for the fish but for the nobility (高贵).” Later words traveled to Count Ji. He sent a soldier to invite him. Jiang Tai Gong ignored the solider, going on with fishing, and was talking to himself, “Fishing, fishing, no fish has been hooked. A shrimp is up to mischief (恶作剧).” The soldier reported this back to Ji Chang, who became more interested in this man. Then, Count Ji sent an official to invite him. It didn’t work. Finally Ji Chang realized Jiang may be a genius, so he went to invite Jiang Tai Gong himself. Jiang saw his sincerity and honesty and finally decided to work for him. In the end, Jiang Tai Gong helped Count Ji and his offspring build a great power and build Zhou dynasty — a great dynasty.Today, people use the old idiom There are always fish willing to be caught by angler Jiang Taigong to describe someone who willingly falls in a trap or does something no matter what the result is. This idiom has been passed on from generation to generation. To some degree, it could be regarded as a part of Chinese philosophy.26. Some movies have played with the idea of making machines the size of a cell (细胞). Today robot technology has brought the idea closer to the real life. In my laboratory, I’m just trying to build such intelligent, or smart, tiny robots. Tiny living things, such as bacteria (细菌), have many intelligent actions. If we can make robots copy some of them, it’s very exciting. The way bacteria travel across their environment is unbelievable. At first, they move around without purpose, but when they start sensing food, like an amino acid (氨基酸), they will move gradually in that direction. As an expert making robots, I think it is great to make tiny robots that can do the same thing. For example, look at something like E. coli (大肠杆菌). It can sense amino acids around it. It can change how it’s moving. It can rebuild or repair itself. In fact, E. coli does all these so well that some researchers are using it as part of their tiny machines. They are making their tiny robots get free rides from E. coli. And E. coli does all the sensing for tiny robots and directs their movements. We’re already using smaller and smaller medical tools, like catheters (导管) that can travel deep into your brain to treat a blood clot (血块). Next, we will put tiny robots into the body that can travel into even smaller spaces and treat illness at an early time. Imagine a tiny robot that can treat a blood clot deep in your brain that can’t be reached with the catheters we are using today. We may not actually need something as powerful as artificial intelligence (AI) in these cases. We can still build a very useful tiny robot with a low degree of intelligence. For example, if a tiny robot notices a blood clot, it can slowly move in that direction, and carry medicine directly to that part. It might only have the intelligence of bacteria but could still work.34 What can we learn about the writer?A. The writer is a middle school teacher.B. The writer is a dentist from a hospital.C. The writer is an expert making robots.D. The writer is an expert making medicine.35. What are some researchers doing according to Paragraph 3?A. Using tiny robots to sense E. coli.B. Letting E. coli work for their tiny robots.C. Changing tiny robots into E. coli’s drivers.D. Telling tiny robots to direct E. coli’s movements.36. What does the writer think of the catheters today?A. They will be widely used by doctors in the future.B. They are not able to get to tinier areas in the body.C. They will be smarter than tiny robots in the future.D. They can help doctors take care of patients on time.37. What’s the last paragraph mainly about?A. AI plays an important role in developing tiny robots.B Tiny robots can run fast and treat a blood clot easily.C. Tiny robots with a low degree of intelligence are still useful.D. We still need very powerful artificial intelligence to treat illness. How do people think differently? This has always been unusual. To search an answer, a scientist named J. P Guilford started a famous study of creativity in the1970s, known as the nine-dot puzzle. He asked the participants (参与者) to connect all nine dots using only four straight lines, without lifting their pencils from the page. All the participants looked for solutions within the square they imagined. Only 20 percent managed to break out of the square and continue their lines in the white space around the dots, while the rest of them were blinded by the boundaries (边界) of the square. The results of Guilford’s study led him to a conclusion:creativity needs you to go outside the box. The idea was widely spread soon. Overnight, it seemed that creativity experts everywhere were teaching managers how to think outside the box. The idea was so popular that no one thought of checking the facts. No one, that is, before two different research teams: Clarke Burham with Kenneth Davis, and Joseph Alba with Robert Weisberg, did another experiment. To make sure that Guilford’s study is correct, both teams divided participants into two groups. The first group was given the same instructions as the participants in Guilford’s experiment. The second group was told to draw the lines outside the imagined box. Guess what? Only a little more than 20 percent solved the puzzle, which is no big difference from the result of Guilford’s experiment. Let’s look a little more closely at the surprising result. Solving this problem requires people to think outside the box. However, direct and clear instructions to “think outside the box” do not help participants improve their performance. The widely spread idea that out-of-the-box thinking makes people more creative can, in some way, be dangerous. After all, with one simple but brilliant experiment, researchers had proved that the connection between thinking outside the box and creativity was a misunderstanding.38. Which of the following patterns can solve the nine-dot puzzle?A. B. C. D. 39. The nine-dot puzzle study is mainly focused on __________A. how people do things in real life.B. Some students don’t enjoy being outside.C what knowledge people have learned.D. how people think in different ways.40. Which is the best title for the passage?A. Puzzle Solving: A Key to CreativityB. Nine-Dot Puzzle: A Magic TestC. Thinking Outside the Box: A Misleading IdeaD.
